Roulette – The Exciting Casino Game For All Players

rouletteThere are several versions of roulette, European, American and French, but by far, the most popular is European Roulette. It was created in 18th century Paris, France. It is extremely popular and is played in casinos around the world as well as being played in online casinos.

The most important variation between the different versions is the single zero (0) wheel as opposed to the double zero (00) wheel. The American version of roulette has two green slots on the wheel, (0) and (00). In European roulette, there is only one green slot, (0). These green slots add to the house edge, or house advantage. For the European roulette version with one green slot the house edge is 2.70%. For casinos featuring the American version, their advantage practically doubles to 5.26%.

In some European casinos, there are two additional rules which benefit the player by further lowering the house edge. The “la partage” rule allows the player to receive back half of his bet if the wager is an even number “outside” bet and the ball lands on zero, lowering the house edge to 1.35%. Other European casinos use the “en prison” rule. In this situation, if the ball lands on zero your lost bet is “imprisoned” until the next spin. If on the next spin the ball hits your number, your original wager will be returned to you with no additional winnings. This also lowers the house advantage to 1.35%. This rule is like a do-over, or a mulligan in golf. As far as casino advantages go, 1.35% is fairly decent, so unless you like to lose your money fast, always look for the European version when playing roulette.

How to Play

In front of the wheel, there’s a table (or felt) with the complete layout of proposed wagers. A player bets by placing his chip (or chips) on a number. There are two classifications of wagers in roulette, the inside bet and the outside bet. Placing an inside bet is done by choosing the exact number that the ball will land or by choosing a small range of numbers as indicated on the betting felt. With an outside bet, a player can choose black or red, even or odd or a larger group of numbers as indicated on the felt. The payout schemes and odds for each type of wager are based on probability.

Once all wagers are complete, the wheel is put into motion with the ball circling the outside rim of the number labeled pockets, one of which the ball will eventually land in. Players can continue to place bets until the dealer says “no more wagers, please”. After the ball lands, the dealer will place a marker or dolly on the winning number, identifying it officially on the corresponding space located on the felt. No action or movement is permitted on the felt until the dealer removes all losing wagers and places all of the winning payouts. At this time, the marker is removed and the next round of wagering commences.
